East Village
IMHO, there's an unfortunate lack of Taiwanese restaurants in NYC so I was very intrigued when my coworker invited me to eat a bowl of beef noodle soup at Ho Foods (not to be mistaken with Whole Foods). The space could fit maybe 15 people max so we were lucky to snag a spot. We started out with the tofu app which was nice and refreshing before digging in to heavy main course. The thousand year old egg balanced well and didn't overpower the cold and sweet tofu. As for the soup, like all the yelp reviews recommended, I ordered the beef noodle soup with a side helping of rich and spicy and upon first bite, my thoughts were, "wow, I need to take my parents here." I'm not even the biggest fan of this type of traditional Taiwanese soup because the meat is often stringy and the soup lacking in flavor but the stuff dished out at Ho Foods is the real deal. The perfectly chewy noodles are an added bonus. Throw in that whole bowl of pickled mustard greens and you got yourself a soul warming authentic meal which almost made me wish it was cold outside. Is this a pricey bowl of noodles? Yes. Is it worth it? Absolutely.
