Williamsburg
I have waited a long time to check this Williamsburg spot off my eat list. Because it's incredibly small (approx. 10 seats) and serves the breakfast lunch set only from 9am to 3pm, it's difficult to get and often there is a long wait. The menu is fixed with the exception of the grilled fish dish which I was offered a choice between spanish mackerel or a yellowtail fillet or cheek. I ended up opting for the cheek because it's my favorite part of the fish although it takes some commitment to pick out the meat. The rest of the set included a miso soup, pickled radishes, a cube of egg custard, mustard greens, purple rice with bonito flakes, and for a few dollars extra, a poached egg in dashi broth. This was all served with barley green tea and proved to be a beautiful and instagram ready meal however don't expect any booming flavors here. It's all pretty straight-forward and minimally seasoned but that also makes it classic and refreshing among the sea of over-hyped fusion places you can find all across the city. I'm not sure the breakfast set is worth the effort for a repeat visit but I will certainly be returning to try my hand at tasting the ramen that this store also produces at night (a toro tonkotsu or uni ramen?!) when it transforms into Yuji Ramen. I would also like to try out the sister restaurant/store Okasana right off the Grand St. stop.
