Upper East Side

Reaching the end of my epic treat yo self week of funemployment, I went to several museums in the Upper East Side including the Frick, Cooper Hewitt, and Museum of New York. One of my favorite spots on the upper east is this classic old school diner/soda shop on the corner of 83rd and Lex. It serves all the staples like tuna melts, breakfast items, and burgers along with scoops and shakes made from Bassett's Ice Cream (another old school classic Philadelphia premium ice cream brand). On this particular afternoon, I ordered the tuna melt which was perfectly crispy on the outside and soft on the inside but with maybe a touch too much celery in the salad. I opted out of the fries after seeing they were the basic frozen crinkle cut kind. The ice cream and coconut cake though were another matter. GET THE CAKE. These are made fresh and displayed on the counter each day. The strawberry ice cream was also incredibly creamy, thick and tasty. Overall, the food here is good (nothing to write home about but solid) but it's really the atmosphere that makes this place shine. Waiters who have obviously been working there forever, the red booth seats, snappy and cheerful service, and the long continuous counter all transport you back to a certain period of New York that is still just as charming as it was back then.
