Flatiron
I've been waiting for months to find a way to eat at Sugarfish and determine if the hype is real but every time I've tried there has been a two hour wait. I finally made it happen on Monday at lunchtime during a snowstorm...and the restaurant was still more than half full! I ordered the largest omakase option which included edamame, tuna in a yuzu sauce, tuna nigiri, salmon nigiri, yellowtail nigiri, snapper and seabass, a toro hand roll, blue crab hand roll, and a special scallop nigiri...which is a massive amount of sushi for $55 in New York. Some pieces were definitely better than others and some standouts for me were the scallop and the fatty tuna nigiri. The salmon and yellowtail were more on the slightly above average side. The rice is noticeably warm in comparison to other sushi places and is particularly noticible for the hand roll which feels hot which I wasn't really a fan of (I couldn't truly enjoy the toro one because I was too distracted by the rice).
This is a great place to get a large and above average quality omakase at a very low price point for New York but in my opinion is not inherently worth the wait unless you plan ahead and also hang out at a bar or do another activity while waiting (Pro-tip. You can also order takeout). If I come back I would likely just order a la cart and focus on the albacore belly, scallops and tuna sashimi and maybe get the blue crab hand role if I was hungry.
