Le Coq Rico offered their pre-lunch menu which normally goes for $38 at the restaurant week price of $29 which was a great deal in my book. The appetizer choices are deviled eggs, a terrine, and a butternut squash soup. The entrees were the quarter chicken, the plat du jour (which that day was chicken and mushroom sausage). The desserts were the famous l'ile flottante, a chocolate chou, or a fruit salad. Out of the appetizers, the terrine was amazing: full of flavor without being overly salty and dressed in a light vinaigrette with a side of radish slaw. The deviled eggs were also creamy and good but only came with a tiny piece of octopus which was a little disappointing. As for the entrée, this restaurant that's famous for its slow-raised chicken did not disappoint. The dark meat was particularly spectacular and as a person who generally shies away from chicken to order what I deem more interesting proteins like pork or duck, this chicken is the exception. The chicken sausage was also quite good and more buttery than I expected with a nice side of fried potatoes which paired well. Lastly, the l'ile flottante did not disappoint. It felt like a deconstructed crème brulee and the merengue in the center is surprisingly soft and not too sweet. The pool of pudding it floats on thought is really where the money is. The chou was also very decadent if you are a chocolate lover and very rich and dark, doused with an extra pour of chocolate tableside.
This is hands down the best chicken I have had in the city and Le Coq Rico lives up to. the hype. Added bonus for all the kitchen staff that speaks fluent French.
