Harlem
During the bomb cyclone this past weekend, the only thing that could have coaxed me out of my apartment was the lure of authentic southern fried chicken to warm my soul. I've been meaning to go to Charles Country Pan Fried Chicken in Harlem for more than a year and it did not disappoint. This very no-frills joint serves tender on-skin chicken lightly breaded in a crispy shell along with classic sides like okra, mac'n'cheese, mashed potatoes, collard greens, etc. And the best part was that everything came under $20 for a massive amount of food and you can also get your chicken smothered in gravy. Overall, it surprisingly didn't feel overly oily or salty which I appreciated and Loaded Weapon (a spoof of Lethal Weapon) playing in the background was an added bonus. I'd definitely come back here to try the other sides which come in generous portions but the chicken is really the star of the show.
