Shnitzelbank

Heidelberg, Germany

After being sent to Germany for a last minute work assignment, my first night I decided that although extremely jetlagged, I needed to get real German schnitzel in my stomach. Similar to katsu from japan, schnitzel is finely sliced pork that is breaded and then deep fried and served with sauerkraut or potatoes. I was in a little town called Heidelberg and based on the recommendation of a friend, found my way to Shnitzelbank: a tiny restaurant in a side alley complete with a dark wood bar and communal tables. The atmosphere was jovial and intimate and I quickly started a conversation with my tablemates, two of which were local students and one was a solo American traveler from Seattle. I ordered the classic pork schnitzel with a glass of reisling to complete the experience. The pork was very thinly sliced and not dredged with oil as I had expected. The sauerkraut was also not as sharp and when I added the lemon to the schnitzel it made for a well-balanced and authentic tasting meal that wasn’t even too filling! It wasn’t remarkable but paired so well with the atmosphere that I couldn’t help but feel all warm and fuzzy inside. I highly recommend this place as a great first meal in Germany.
