Red Ox Inn

Heidelberg, Germany

The Red Ox Inn is one of the oldest student pubs in Heidelberg. The house was built in 1703 and has been owned by the Spengel family for 170 years. It even has a history of famous people stopping for a drink including Mark Twain and John Wayne. Like most bars in the city, the furnishings were all dark wood and the pub is decorated with tons of glasses hooked to the ceiling. I was there for dinner but this pub is also famous for nightly piano performances starting at 7:30pm every day. Although at the moment it was filled with a Chinese tourist group, I ordered the Kummelbraten vom Schweinenacken which was a roast pork in a dark beer sauce served with red cabbage and mashed potatoes on the side. The pork was incredible tender and soft, the gravy delicious with the potatoes, and the red cabbage gave the dish a bit of acidity. Once again, I was struck by how refined and not heavy this meal was and the Heidelberg wheat beer paired very well.
