Lower East Side
What i suggest: Opium Den, Shade
With some of the most inventive flavors out of the ice cream shops in Manhattan (which is really saying something) using things like bleu cheese, pine stracciatella or serrano pepper, this ice cream shop is a must for the adventurous foodie. The cones and cookies that go with the ice cream are equally interesting including blue corn and lemon poppyseed. It's obvious that a lot of thought is put into the rotating menu of off-kilter flavors and ingredients and the ice cream itself has a pretty firm consistency. This is a "grown-up" ice cream you slowly savor and ponder on but I couldn't help but miss the unadulterated child-like joy that comes with wolfing down something a little less cerebral.
